Got a passion for fashion that’s coupled with a style that stands out? You could be on your way to being the ultimate “Glam God.”

On August 21st, VH1 premiers “Glam God,” the latest in its line of reality TV shows. Hosted by Vivica A. Fox, who is a red carpet favorite and fashion icon in her own right, the show follows wannabe celebrity stylists as they compete for a chance to win the title of ultimate “Glam God.”

“It’s basically a show about putting stylists to the test,” Fox explains, “styling celebrities for red-carpet events from the Oscars to the Grammys to a film premiere to a Hollywood “It” party. “It will be interesting for people to see what goes into it.”

Throughout the course of the eight-episode series, twelve stylists from all over the country will be moved into an apartment in downtown Los Angeles and put through a serious of fashion challenges to see if their talent puts them on the A-list, or the do-not-wear list. The challenges are even ripped from the pages of current media outlets, many of which mercilessly scrutinize the styles of celebrities at a variety of events.

“We took some of the challenges from today’s tabloids – who wore it best, things like that,” Fox explains. “The first couple of weeks, they work together in two teams, and when we got down to the top five, they compete as individuals.” In each mission, contestants are given major tasks with limited budgets and expected to create complete looks, judging the outcome on hair and makeup as well as wardrobe. They have access to the Bluefly closest, and some tasks have them working with designers like Paige Denim or shopping on Robertson Boulevard.

But what exactly sets someone apart as an A-list stylist? “They’ve got to have their eye on what’s current and also what’s next,” she explains. “You have to be able to turn your celebrity client into a true fashionista that people copy and emulate.”

Though Fox feels that many of the contestants were extremely talented at their craft, she also saw that they each had a lot to learn about styling at such a high level.

“They don’t know how to get out of their own way sometimes,” she suggests of some of the contestants. “They think, ‘No, this is what I think is hot,’ when you sometimes have to look at not doing too much – not overloading an outfit.”

The “too much” factor seemed to be a trend of its own among the contestants. “Some of the guys would THINK they know fashion, but then they’d end up doing too much,” she says with a laugh. “Sometimes less is more.”

Fox should know a little something about being a fashionista, considering her status in Hollywood and her frequent appearances on industry best-dressed lists. In addition to having top stylists in her corner and an affinity for old-school glamour, she’s developed her own keen eye for what to wear and what to leave on the racks.

Her biggest secret?

“One must always dress appropriately,” she says emphatically. “I’ve been to so many award shows and red carpet events, and I can tell when they’re going to be on those pages with ‘What was she thinking?’ or ‘Fashion Disaster.’”

As Executive Producer of the show, Fox was privy to the behind-the-scenes action, and she confesses that there is a fair share of drama that will not leave viewers disappointed. “Those first couple of weeks we have some folks on there that you’re going to be like, ‘Oh God, what a train wreck!’” she says with a laugh. “But that’s what makes these shows so great – it’s a train wreck that you just love to watch week after week.”

Not only does the show come with drama, it comes with a heavy dose of how-to that Fox thinks the viewers will enjoy.

“You can watch and be educated about red carpet dos and don’ts and all the styling tips and tricks of the trade,” she says enthusiastically. “And there is definitely some dirt!” In addition to the $100,000 grand prize, the winner of the competition will win the opportunity to style an A-list celebrity, putting their “Glam God” title to the ultimate test.

Fashion? Prizes? Drama? Sounds like a gift from the glam gods indeed.

Tune in to watch “Glam Gods” on VH1, premiering August 21st.
